Alocasia wins again with another dazzling display of living beauty. The Cuprea’s leaves delicately twinkle as light reflects off of the almost metallic, dark chocolatey-green foliage. Similar to the Polly, this Alocasia is more compact than others, displaying a jungle rich burgundy underside which offers depth against the lustre of its glossy new growth.
Alocasia cuprea Red Secret Care & Info Guide
Horty Hints
Hibernating, hun? Alocasia undergo a period of dormancy during the winter, where leaves will drop and the plant might die back altogether. Do not bin the plant, as it will return in spring if kept warm and moist.
Beware the burn! Avoid placing your Alocasia in direct sunlight as this can cause the leaves to scorch.
Ditch the drought! Make sure to keep your Alocasia’s soil moist (not wet) at all times to keep it happy and healthy.
Light
Thrives in bright, well-lit conditions, however direct sunlight should be avoided as it will dull the plant’s colourful leaves. Alocasia do not benefit from shade, and will begin to suffer if light is too low.
Watering
The Alocasia’s soil should be kept moist with warm water. Do not allow the soil to dry-out but be wary not to overwater. Water less in winter when the plant is dormant.
Temperature
Alocasia cuprea Red Secret needs to be kept warm. Normal room temperature is ideal: between 18-22°C. Avoid cold draughts.
Humidity
Needs a moist environment with above average humidity. Stand on a pebble tray to improve humidity and mist frequently. The ideal location would be a bright, steamy bathroom or kitchen.
Feed
Apply a slow release fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
Height & Growth Rate
Unlike most other Alocasia, the cuprea Red Secret is slow growing. This Elephant Ear will typically reach a maximum height of 1 metre.
