Aphelandra squarrosa Botanica – Zebra Plant Care & Info Guide
Horty Hints
Know Your Yellow. Mature leaves will naturally begin to yellow as they age but leaves yellowing in quick succession are likely to be an issue with overwatering.
Living on the edge! Crisping up at the edges of leaves is a watering issue or overexposure to bright light. Brown leaf tips are common on this plant but will spread to whole leaves if left to dry out or exposed to too much bright sunshine.
Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove accumulated dust. Do not use leaf shine as this will damage the foliage.
Light
Zebra Plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight. Place your plant near a window with filtered sunlight or use sheer curtains to diffuse direct sunlight. Avoid exposing it to harsh, direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain from the pot’s bottom. Think ‘little and often’ as a watering policy.
Temperature
Prefers warm to high temperatures, ideally between 18-27°C but as low as 14°C. Keep warm during winter. Avoid sudden temperature drops and drafts, as they can stress the plant.
Humidity
High humidity levels are a must. Mist frequently to improve humidity conditions and pop it near the shower from time-to-time to give it an extra boost.
Feed
Apply a weak dose of a nitrogen-rich foliage fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
