Stromanthe is a member of the Maranta family along with Calathea and Ctenanthe. All have exquisite foliage and are known as Prayer Plants due to the way the leaves close upwards at night.
This variegated Stromanthe has exuberant deep tropical green leaves, with striking magenta undersides. It deserves a front row seat in a contemporary pot.
Stromanthe sanguinea Stripestar Care & Info Guide
Horty Hints
Location, Location, Location! Too little sun will cause the vivid colours on this plant to fade, too much and it will bleach and burn. A north or east-facing window for the win.
Crisp, brown leaves are an indication that the air surrounding the plant is too dry. Move your Triostar to a more humid room such as the bathroom or kitchen, or give it an occasional misting to allow it to recover.
Make sure to check if the top of your Stromanthe’s soil has begun to dry out before watering, as overwatering can cause root rot.
Light
Stromanthe sanguinea Stripestar prefers bright, indirect light, however is hardy enough to tolerate some partial, light shade.
Watering
Keep soil barely moist at all times. Allow the top of the soil to dry out slightly before watering. Too much water will cause root rot.
Temperature
The Stomanthe sanguinea enjoys normal household temperatures from 16-24°C, but can tolerate temperatures as low as 13°C.
Humidity
High humidity levels are an advantage. To improve humidity, mist frequently or move your plant to a typically steamy room such as the kitchen or bathroom.
Feed
Apply a weak dose of a liquid fertiliser once or twice a month during the growing season.
Height & Growth Rate
The Triostar is a very slow-growing plant and usually reaches an ultimate height of around 80-90cm with a wide, spreading habit.
Toxicity
Similar to its relative, Calathea, these plants are mildly toxic. Keep away from children and animals.
Origin
Stromanthe sanguinea Stripestar originates from tropical Brazil.
